When is a Street Cut Permit Needed?
A street cut permit authorizes a registered, bonded contractor to excavate in a public street or alley to access a public utility line. The review and issuance of these permits allows City staff to assess the need for the street cut, ensure that the contractor can perform the work in a manner consistent with City standards, impose traffic control standards if necessary, specify backfilling requirements, and outline City specifications for the patching process.
There are certain instances when a street cut permit is not required to be issued, such as:
- Franchise utility work (examples: electric or t.v. cable utility)
- Work conducted by City crews
- Work associated with capital projects administered through the City’s Engineering Services
- Work associated with public improvements accomplished by private contractors through Public Improvement by Private Contractor (PIPC) permits administered by Engineering Services
Who May Purchase this Permit?
Because of the potential liability associated with working in the public right-of-way, only contractors who possess general liability insurance in the amounts listed on page 2 of the Right of Way (ROW) Permit Application may be issued these permits.
What is the Cost of the Permit?
Local or residential street - $50.00. Arterial or collector street - $100.00.
