Location & Directions

The Maple Grove Shelter is located on the northwest side of Avery Park and Natural Area. This Avery Park map (PDF) may be useful in helping you locate the shelter inside the park.

From Philomath Blvd (the Hwy 20/34 bypass), you can enter Avery Park by turning at the 15th Street/Avery stoplight and crossing the small bridge into the park. Take the first right, then turn right again into the Maple Grove area.

Or from 99W South, take Avery Ave to the stop sign just over the railroad tracks. Turn right to continue on Avery Park Drive. Pass the Rose Garden then turn left (do not cross over the Marys River bridge). The entrance to Maple Groves's area will be on your right.

Facility Description & Capacity

The Maple Grove Shelter is nestled in a secluded grove of trees in Avery Park. There are generally 6 standard picnic tables at the shelter.

The Maple Grove Shelter features:

  • Capacity of 100 people in the area, or 50 people under roof
  • Limited views of Mary's River
  • Playground equipment: swings and tire climbing structure
  • Large barbeque
  • Potable water via a nearby drinking fountain
  • 110-volt outlets
  • Automatic lights that come on at dusk
  • Ample parking

There is one standard, portable restroom at the shelter. Additional restrooms are within walking distance, through the woods, near the Avery Park playing fields and handicapped accessible playground area.

Nearby Park Features

The Maple Grove Shelter sits in Avery Park and Natural Area which features 75 acres of natural areas, sports fields, picnic shelters and varied play equipment areas. The nearby historic steam locomotive and an art sculpture called the dinosaur bones are favorite places for kids to climb and explore. A walking/jogging trail winds through the park and long Marys River.The Rose Garden is within walking distance of the Maple Grove Shelter. All ball fields within Avery Park and Natural Area are available on a first come, first served basis unless specifically reserved via a permit for your event.

Alcohol / Sound Considerations

Alcohol is permitted in the shelter area only with an approved Alcohol Permit. See the permit fee below. Alcohol permits are only issued to individuals aged 21 or older; ID is required.

Amplified sound is allowed with an approved Sound Permit. See the permit fee below.

Renters will be given a copy of the City's codes regarding alcohol and/or amplified sound in public places and must agree to abide by these codes.

Rental Fees

The Maple Grove Shelter is rented in 4-hour time blocks. Your time block choices are:
          8 am to 12 pm
          1 pm to 5 pm
          6 pm to 10 pm

When renters reserve more than one time block, the hour in between time blocks is offered at no additional charge.
Remember that reservation times must include time to set up and tear down your event.

 

Monday - Thursday:

$30.00 per 4-hour time block

 

Friday - Sunday & Holidays:

$45.00 per 4-hour time block

Additional fees, when applicable:

 

Alcohol Permit:

$ 5.00

  Sound Permit: $ 5.00
     
  Reservable ball fields:  
         Monday - Thursday: $30.00 for 2-hours / $75.00 for exclusive use of a ball field all day
         Friday - Sunday & Holidays: $45.00 for 2-hours / $100.00 for exclusive use of a ball field all day
 

Softball, Horseshoes, or Volleyball equipment:

$ 5.00 per set, per day (with a $25 credit card deposit that is fully refunded upon return of the equipment)

NOTE ABOUT FEES: All fees are subject to change without notice. Additional fees/requirements may apply, especially for activities or events outside of a standard group gathering. Our staff can help you determine if these fees apply to your event.

REFUND POLICY: The alcohol and sound permit fees are non-refundable. Refunds for rental fees will not be given if the written request is received less than five (5) business days before the date of the event. NO refunds are granted due to inclement weather. When a rental fee refund is requested and approved, a $10 processing fee will be deducted from the amount refunded. The refund request form is found on the last page of the Refund Policy (PDF).

Availability & Reservations

The Maple Grove Shelter may be rented from April 1st to October 31st each year; it is rented in 4-hour time blocks:
          8 am to 12 pm
          1 pm to 5 pm
          6 pm to 10 pm

The shelter can be reserved up to one year from the date of your event. Call Parks & Recreation at 541-766-6918, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm to check availability and hold your reservation.

Renters must complete permits and pay in full within 1 week of reserving the space, or within 2 business days of the event, whichever comes first.
